Through the spring meadows
Tucked away in a quiet canyon carved by the Orahovštica River, this small valley once pulsed with life. Over ten villages, big and small, were nestled along the gentle slopes of the canyon — shielded from the harsh southern wind (the yugo, which sweeps in from the sea during winter, carrying Saharan sand in yellow-gray clouds) and from the piercing northern gusts that could snap the branches of ancient oak trees.
forest springs and streams
Sheltered behind forested hills, people here led lives that were tough, but full of quiet, seasonal joys — completely in tune with the rhythm of nature. In spring, they gathered elderflower and acacia blossoms to make syrup, often mixing them with mint and wild thyme. Summer brought long, hot days spent tending terraced gardens cut into rocky ground - land made fertile only through patience and generations of steady work. The reward: small, sun-sweetened grapes of ancient varieties such as Vranac and Lisica, pressed into strong rakija and bold, earthy wine.

The view on Skadar Lake from the old sea-bound road
Livestock grazed freely in the floodplains near Lake Skadar, and in autumn, herds returned home as families stacked firewood for the short but sometimes harsh winter ahead. When it came, people gathered around hearths in their stone-built homes, baking soft bread, sipping homemade rakija, and waiting out the cold months keeping fire and awaiting spring.
flowers growing from the stones
The 1979 earthquake changed everything. Many houses across Crmnica were badly damaged or destroyed beyond repair. With few options left, people moved to cities in search of better lives, and the valley slowly emptied. Orchards were overtaken by young hornbeam forests. Old stone boundaries, once marking fields and vineyards, crumbled under moss and time, slipping quietly into memory.

All shades of green

Still, the old paths remain.

The footpaths and arched stone bridges that once linked these villages are still here, waiting. Walk them now and take a few quiet steps back into the story of this place.
